New department to monitor gambling

Gambling activity rises in Albania

Figures reported earlier this month by the Finance Ministry in Albania suggest that many in the impoverished nation are increasing their gambling activity. In January the rise in amounts wagered is estimated to have been 30% higher than in January 2008. Gambling throughout 2008 was almost 70% higher than the previous year.

The only casino, the Regency Casino Tirana, opened in 2005 with 21 gaming tables and 240 slots. In addition there are around 20 bookmakers and 30 private companies operating lotteries and sports betting with thousands of outlets around the country. Recently a new government body has been set up under the Finance Ministry to monitor the Albanian gaming sector. It is suspected that money laundering is rife in the country.

A new law in force since January prohibits those under the age of 18 from entering betting shops but reportedly this is widely ignored. According to a spokesman from the tax office, gambling revenues have continued a steep rise over several years. In 2008 Albanians wagered more than US$100 million, an increase of US$40 million on 2007. (E-03.23.09)
