A bill has been introduced in the Dominican Republic Congress that would prohibit slot machines outside casinos. All those establishments presently operating the gaming machines, such as sports betting shops, bars, restaurants and billiard halls, now face the prospect of losing their profits from gambling.
The Dominican Republic has recently been expanding its tourism industry and last year two new casino resorts were opened. The country's ecomomy is growing around 10% a year and the country has become a popular place for investment by overseas gaming operators. In 2006 amendments to the Casino Law included reforms concerning the access of minors to gambling operations. This latest initiative once again adresses the proliferation of gaming in places where minors have access.
The bill, introduced via the Senate, would amend the law regulating slot machine operations outside casinos. If it is approved, the slots licences authorised previously would be withdrawn. The new law would give powers to the Casino Commission, part of the Finance Ministry, to remove all gaming machines from properties other than casinos within 60 days of the law being enacted.
