The relationship cannot be described as symbiotic because slot machines make money without race tracks. However, it is becoming increasingly evident that many race tracks around the world cannot survive without the added revenue provided by slot machines. Several states in the US have passed laws allowing slot machine operations at their race tracks (racinos) and several more are debating the matter.
Legislators in Massachusetts, the Bay State, are expected to vote on the issue today and a giant rally is planned in front of the State House by track employees. Connecticut’s casinos and Rhode Island’s slots parlours have had a detrimental affect on the racing industry in neighbouring Massachusetts. Race track owners insist that they need slot machines to maintain the viability racing but some state lawmakers oppose the idea.
The House debate will consider allowing slot machines at the four state dog and horse tracks, a total of 8,000 machines. If the vote goes against the proposition then the track owners intend to keep trying. However, without slots at least one track, Wonderland, is likely to close immediately. A vote will also be taken on reinstating simulcasting at the four tracks, since the simulcast law expired last Saturday. The vote on the two issues could determine whether racing has a future in Massachusetts. (E-04.05.06)
