Established in 1995, Supreme Ventures Ltd (SVL) is a locally owned Jamaican company that in 2001 began operating lottery games. In 2003 it acquired the Jamaica Lottery Company and has since expanded into lottery terminals, with over 900 around the island. In partnership with GTECH Jamaica, the company plays an integral role in furthering the country’s gaming industry.
This week SVL has started a publicity campaign for its new telebetting feature, taking advantage of the government’s amendment last year to allow telephone betting on lottery games. The Jamaican government has announced plans to allow telephone betting on horseracing and hopes to enact the bill before the end of the year. An estimated 90% of Jamaicans use mobile phones.
SVL made less operating profit in the first quarter than the same quarter of 2008. This was partly due to the company paying out 16% more in prize money. SVL sales in 2007 reached over US$17 billion. The new telephone betting services are expected to give the government a substantial increase in revenue and some bookmakers are already gearing up to offer the service as soon as the necessary law is passed.
