It appears that the UK government is about to give bingo operators something to smile about this week. Recently they have had little reason to be cheerful, what with the smoking ban, the loss of some gaming machines, and double taxation all cutting into operating profits. Falling attendances have added to their woes, causing some of the less profitable venues to close.
The government is expected to announce that slot machine numbers, presently limited to four maximum jackpot (£500) machines, will be relaxed. It is not yet clear exactly what changes the government will allow but machine numbers could be linked to the size of the bingo premises and number of players. In Birmingham Gala Bingo has been accused of trying to circumvent the rules governing the maximum number of gaming machines by applying for four different licences in one building.
In March the Gambling Commission wrote to local authorities saying that it was aware that some operators may be considering applying for licences, even though they do not intend to provide the primary activity the licence is intended to authorise. The Commission reminded Councils that bingo premises should not be making gaming machines available for use without also offering facilities for playing bingo, and that the operator must provide facilities for the playing of bingo in order to enjoy the machine entitlement.
