Goa Government said to be reviewing gambling policy

BJP CALLS FOR CASINOS TO GO

In the Indian state of Goa this weekend the State Executive of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has demanded that the present government cancel all offshore casino licences. There is approval for six licences on a first come, first served basis, which has led to casino ships being brought into the Mandovi River where they cause problems to local fisherman and other river traffic.

At a press conference following a meeting of the State Executive, BJP Chief Shripad Naik told reporters that all the licences should be cancelled by bringing in an amendment to the Anti Gambling Act. In October last year members of the Anti-Casino Movement (ACM) commenced a campaign to demand the implementation of the Anti Gambling Act and for casinos to go. The ACM noted that the definition of ‘offshore’ had not been defined in the amendment to the Act, which allows casino ships to operate but without due regulations and restrictions in force.

The Goa Government is said to be reviewing their offshore casino policy. So far two offshore casino licences have been granted, other applicants are awaiting approval. Naik has suggested that kickbacks have played their part in the availability of casino licences. Several 5-star hotels also have casinos or slots operations. Gambling is seen by some as a tourist attraction and provider of employment but there are also problems with a lack of necessary infrastructure to support further growth. Casino ships have already been charged with river pollution, blocking shipping channels and destroying traditional fishing grounds.
