Changing politics affect super casino bid race

WEMBLEY MAY BE NON-STARTER

Brent Council was one of the successful shortlisted bidders for Britain’s first super casino licence. The Council, previously Labour held, spent over £76,000 (US$140,700) on two impact assessment studies before submitting their bid to bring regeneration to Wembley. Since then things, and party majority in the Council, have changed. The Liberal Democrats are now the largest party in Brent Council, and they are against the super casino project.

Backed by Conservative councillors, the Lib Dems are proposing to withdraw Wembley’s bid. Labour insists that a casino and the accompanying conference facilities are essential for regeneration that would benefit local people and the local economy. The new national stadium at Wembley is under construction but the Labour Council considered that for success the whole entertainment and commercial package was required.

Despite the possible social impact it was decided by the previous Council that the benefits of the scheme outweighed disadvantages. Whether the new Council will withdraw the Brent application to the Casino Advisory Panel (CAP) remains to be seen. Should they decide to let it ride, the odds remain long on Wembley being first past the finishing post when Britain names the location of its prototype super casino. (E-06.15.06)
