Local authorities take a gamble on casino licences

CONTEST FOR 17 NEW CASINOS

The deadline passed on Friday and it is believed that 75 local authorities have expressed their interest to the Casino Advisory Panel in having one of the 17 new casino licences. Around 46 applications seem to have been for the one ‘super’ casino licence to be granted. The other applications were for the 8 large and 8 small casino licences.

Blackpool is still regarded as the location most likely to win the coveted mega casino. Persistent rumours that the Government will reconsider its decision and allow more than one Las Vegas style casino have yet to prove correct, but many still expect that possibly four will get the final go-ahead. However, yesterday’s The Observer reported that the Conservatives are preparing to pave the way to an increase, and will hold a seminar at Westminster to discuss the possibility.

Councils from places as diverse as Bournemouth and Scarborough, Glasgow and Sevenoaks have all submitted applications for casinos varying in size. The City of Westminster apparently put in for two – either large, small or both – without having particular locations in mind. The Casino Advisory Panel is due to publish the list of applicants tomorrow. (E-04.03.06)
