Recent studies in Cyprus have recommended that casinos should be developed in the south of the island to counteract the effects of casinos in the north. The Commerce Ministry commissioned the studies following evidence that the casinos operating in the Turkish held north were generating Greek Cypriot problem gamblers but no revenue for the government. A financial study says that the development of casinos in the south should aim at the protecting society, promoting tourism, increasing state income and minimising gambling in the north of the island.
Two casinos are initially proposed for the Nicosia, Limassol or Larnaca areas. The operations would be aimed at local players and be casino developments and not casino complexes. A third Las Vegas-style resort destination casino is suggested for the region between Limassol and the Troodos Mountains, close to tourist areas but away from town planning. 50 gaming tables and 600 gaming machines are recommended for the two casinos which should include 5-star hotels with a minimum 100 rooms.
The casino resort should be allowed 1,500 gaming machines and up to 80 gaming tables. A 5-star 500-room hotel must include other facilities such as golf course, conference and exhibition centre. According to the financial study, the resort should make profits for the state of up to US$95 million and the two exclusive purpose casinos around US$30 million. There would also be an employment boost of over 5,000 jobs if all three casinos are built. The studies are expected to be presented to the political parties in Cyprus before long. (E-12.18.06)
