Figures are already up on last year when over 500,000 visitors participated in the Durban Beach Africa festival. This year’s event, billed as the world’s greatest beach festival, starts today and Durban businesses are looking forward to a bumper winter season. South Africa’s Golden Mile (or six kilometres) that runs from 30 June to 09 July will host the surf competition at the centre of the festival – a World Qualifying Series event.
The incredible year-round sunshine and warmth of Durban in Kwazulu-Natal make it a favourite tourist spot for South Africans and foreign visitors alike. The beaches are a great attraction and there is plenty of entertainment and nightlife along the length of the so-called Golden Mile. There are two casinos in Durban, Sun International’s Sibaya and Tsogo Sun Gaming’s Sun Coast. Both casinos have prepared a warm welcome for players.
Event Organizers have conceptualized ‘A twist of Music with a dash of Fashion’, a pioneering concept what will see young local designers showcasing for the visitors to the beach. The Styles of music chosen, Jazz, Rap/Hip Hop, Core South African (which includes popular forms such as Jive and Marabi), and Pop, have all been chosen for their ability to translate into themes for the various designers to use to influence their collections. This music not only meets with the public demand but allows for the combination of music, singing, dancing and fashion into a full production.
What with the added balmy Durban winter weather, the sports clinics and beach activities, the chill zones and the chance to catch up on the 2006 World Cup soccer all on the beach, it would appear that the Golden Mile is the happening place to be. (E-06.30.06)
