Ever since the Pennsylvanian slot machines started operating they have proved a challenge for the established East Coast gaming centres. Atlantic City has seen its yearly revenue decline for the first time in its 28-year history whilst neighbouring states are upping the gaming ante in order to compete. A recent report from Spectrum Gaming, covering 1 September to 30 November 2007 shows that four Pennsylvania slots operations are in the top five on the East Coast.
Mohegan Sun is the shining star for slots operations. Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs in Pennsylvania was top at US$403 per machine per day; Mohegan Sun in Connecticut was second with US$390. Three other Pennsylvania casinos – Philadelphia Park, the Meadows and Harrah’s Chester – made between US$322 and US$369, all above an industry target of US$250 to US$300.
The sixth and latest slots facility to open in Pennsylvania is Mount Airy, which has been operating since October last. In December the Gross Terminal Revenue for five of the locations was down from the November figures. Mohegan Sun at Pocono Downs was the only venue to see an increase, although this was still under amounts being won back in July – under US$12 million compared to over US$17 million. Pennsylvania’s own slot machine operations also have to deal with greater competition. (E-01.14.08)
