Overwhelming response to eCOGRA survey

PLAY IT SAFE SEAL OF APPROVAL

Despite only 29% of players responding to the survey having previously heard of eCOGRA, just under 11,000 people responded – giving the first comprehensive picture of the ‘average’ online gambler. The result of the survey, published last week, gives an insight into player behaviour and attitudes to the online gaming industry. It also confirms that most online poker players are likely to be male and between the age of 26 to 35. The majority of those responding to the survey said that they would look for the eCOGRA Play it Safe seal of approval before gambling on a site.

Andrew Beveridge, CEO, eCOGRA commented on the findings: "This is a reminder about the vast majority of players who enjoy this form of entertainment. Our job is to signpost players towards those operators who are meeting the majority's expectations regarding fair play, responsible operator conduct and provisions to address problem gambling. We are encouraged by much of the feedback, but also recognise that we still have some way to go.

"This report provides invaluable information that will shape our approach for the next year as we continue to provide players with a 'gold standard' level of protection. We are delighted that the vast majority of players who responded were supportive of eCOGRA's efforts and we hope this endorsement will encourage those within the industry that have yet to apply for our 'Play it Safe' seal, to do so over the coming year."

The most important single motivator for playing at a particular casino site is its bonuses (75%), followed by game variety (62%), deposit method and reputation (both 56%) and then promptness of payouts (54%). More surprisingly the study reveals that to make money or to win was much less important than the entertainment and excitement to online gamblers. It appears that playing poker or casino games online is viewed by most as a form of leisure activity, with a weekly spend around the equivalent of a night out.

On the customer service front, online gaming companies score a hit. Compared to other industries players felt they received the same level or significantly better levels of customer service, even when in dispute with a site. On the subject of losses, it emerges that players do better financially if they refrain from chasing losses and do not let the results of previous games influence them. This basic understanding of odds is something well learned by all gamblers.
