EGBA seeks to promote online gambling policy discussions

Responsible Gaming Day at the European Parliament

In April 2008 the inaugural ‘Responsible Gaming Day’ was held at the European Parliament and attended by politicians, academics and industry representatives. The European Union was called upon to ensure a safer and more secure online gaming environment for consumers. The European Gaming and Betting Association (EGBA) sought to gain commitment from all stakeholders for cooperation on responsible gambling. EGBA is the industry body representing the leading online gaming and betting operators established, licensed and regulated within the EU. EGBA promotes the implementation of a fair, competitive and regulated market for online gaming operators throughout Europe in line with EU law.

Today, three years on, ‘Responsible Gaming Day’, organized by EGBA, is again being held at the European Parliament and the same message is being given. The event provides an opportunity for interested stakeholders to participate in a fact-based discussion around best practices for responsible gaming and betting in the EU. The choice of topic this year reflects the many changes in the EU policy environment since last year’s event, such as the Digital Agenda and the announcement of a Green Paper for the gambling sector. The programme will seek to generate an informed and vibrant discussion that will make a real contribution to the policy discussions affecting the sector across Europe.

Panel discussions include subjects such as: ‘Green Paper process: Dealing Europe a winning hand?’; ‘The Digital Agenda and responsible gaming’; and ‘The Parliament’s perspective? Priorities for a future EU gambling policy’. Speakers include François Arbault, a Member of Commissioner Michel Barnier’s private office; Norbert Teufelberger, EGBA Chairman and co-CEO bwin; Simon Planzer, Attorney at Law and Lecturer in Law at the University of St.Gallen, Switzerland; and various Members of the European Parliament. Unlike previous years, RGD III runs for a half day, allowing more participants to combine attendance with their additional responsibilities. (E-10.13.10)
