Florida Gaming Corporation owns jai-alai frontons with simulcasting operations in Miami and Ft. Pierce, Florida and is the largest jai-alai operator in the world. In addition, Poker has been added as its newest product to the Miami facility. With the opening of the Crystal Card Room, Florida Gaming is now one of the largest Poker operators in the state of Florida.
The company has announced that it will increase its Miami Jai-Alai casino footprint from the present 8.6 acres to approximately 20 acres, accommodating any future expansion. It also will allow Florida Gaming to enclose its casino area and provide a controlled, safe and well-illuminated facility. The 10.982 acres is being acquired from Miami-Dade County in exchange for a right-of-way of .492 acres to be used by Miami-Dade Metro Rail. The Company agreed to exchange the .492 acres valued at $1,014,300, plus cash of $1,572,785, and a 15-year, 7 ¼% fixed rate interest in the amount of $14,155,060.
Miami Jai-Alai has the right to operate 2,000 slot machines as well as wagers on live jai-alai, simulcast horseracing and jai-alai. It also operates poker and domino tables. Jai-Alai, which can trace its origins back to the game of Pelota Vasca (Basque Ball) some three hundred years ago in Spain’s Pyrenees and has been)labelled the world’s fastest game, is played in Miami every afternoon except Tuesdays, and Friday and Saturday evenings.
