Rank and Gala object to Stanley casino plan

EDINBURGH’S 5th CASINO

The Edinburgh city licensing board will today consider plans put forward by Stanley Casinos for a large casino at Fountainpark. The new development would include a 2700 sq m gaming floor, making it one of the largest in Edinburgh. Stanley already operates three other casinos in the city.

The Gala Group has declared the new development to be unsuitable for the site and the Rank Group agrees, also filing an objection on the grounds that it plans to move its present Fountainbridge Mecca bingo operation to Fountainpark. Rank also objected to the public announcement of the development failing to mention Fountainpark, saying that the public would be ‘reasonably’ unaware of the precise location where Stanley intends to operate the new casino.

The Stanley Casino development would be on the site of the former Eros and Elite nightclub that was closed in 2004 after repeated licence violations for violence. The Fountainpark leisure complex includes restaurants, cinema, bowling alley and health club. Under the standing casino licensing laws Stanley will have to show demand for a casino, and Edinburgh’s present four casinos are not operating at capacity. The new development would be expected to have room for a minimum 1,000 players. (E-01.16.06)
