The changing face of casino design

FOXWOODS SEES THE LIGHT

In an unusual move the Foxwoods Resort Casino in Connecticut is designing its US$700 million extension to let in the light. Award winning architect Paul Steelman will draw up plans to include large areas of natural light to create an ambience distinct from the majority of casinos. Wynn Las Vegas was built with an atrium but most gaming venues keep natural light out wherever possible, just as there are no clocks to remind patrons of the passing hours.

When the UK Gambling Act 2005 became law last April, the government stressed that casinos would not be allowed to employ tricks to keep people gambling. Such things as the absence of clocks, no visible daylight and even the use of aromas have been used to encourage players to stay longer at the machines or gaming tables, and the Foxwoods decision to allow visitors views outside is practically unheard of in Las Vegas.

Foxwoods has the advantage of having no competition within 30 miles so it is safe to let players’ attention wander at times. A huge botanical garden will be part of the design and the restaurant and convention space will feature large areas of glass. The gaming area, however, is not expected to be bathed in natural light. That would be shedding a little too much light on the subject. (E-10.07.05)
