In the latest edition of the GamCare News, the Chairman of the Gambling Commission, Peter Dean, emphasises the link between the Commission’s duties and the work undertaken by the Responsibility in Gambling Trust (RIGT). The Trust has been established to raise money, principally from the gaming industry, for treatment, education and research into problem gambling, and the Gambling Commission will work closely with it whilst not duplicating its functions.
GamCare Chief Executive, Jill Davidson, is seeking funding from RIGT for an advertising strategy and the introduction of an online counselling service from June. The charity has already done valuable work in the remote industry and is seeing an increasing number of both large and small operators coming forward to work with it. Existing clients include Camelot, PartyPoker, Betfair, Wagerworks and Sky, and GamCare leads the way in consultation and implementation of social responsibility programmes in the remote gambling industry.
After a trip to Russia last September, on a consultancy basis for Storm Casinos, several members of the GamCare team will be travelling to Russia to train Storm staff and their chosen clinical service provider. There is a serious gambling problem in Russia, with slot machine numbers reckoned by some to exceed 350,000, and it is hoped that other Russian companies will follow the lead of Storm in the introduction of social responsibility at all levels of operation.
With excellent articles on subjects such as ‘Problem Gambling and Homelessness: A Hidden Issue,’ ‘Preventing Gambling Related Crime’ and more, the Winter 2005/06 edition of GamCare News is a ‘must read’ for anyone in the gaming industry. Editor Teresa Tunstall, who will be travelling to Moscow this month to undertake training, comments that even Napoleon avoided Russia in January. Even with the climate there reaching record lows this winter, GamCare is sure to further enhance its reputation and the respect it receives from the global gambling industry.
