PBL and Macquarie extend offer for Gateway Casinos to September

NEW WORLD GAMING AWAITS REGULATORY APPROVAL

Gateway Casinos Inc has operated Gateway Casinos in Burnaby, Greater Vancouver since March 1999. The British Colombia-based company provides gaming management services to the British Colombia Lottery Corporation. It also operates a charity casino in Edmonton, Alberta as well as, through Lake City Casinos, the Kelowna, Kamloops, Pentiction and Vernon Casinos. A new facility, the Cascades Casino entertainment complex, has been opened in the City of Langley.

A takeover offer from Australian Publishing and Broadcasting Ltd (PBL) and Macquarie Bank, due to expire 25 July has been extended to 26 September. If the bid is successful, the New World Gaming Partners Ltd joint venture will gain all the Gateway casinos in Canada. The takeover is subject to approval from the local regulators but PBL and Macquarie are confident they will obtain clearance before the 26 September deadline.

Both Macquarie and PBL are looking to expand abroad into global markets. Their New World Gaming joint venture has bid C$886 million (US$847 million) to buy Gateway Casinos. The wait for regulatory approval had previously extended the bid in June to 25 July. Discussions with regulators in British Colombia and Alberta have led New World Gaming to expect approval on or before 24 September. (E-07.19.07)
