Fierce competition leads to job cuts at Galaxy

REEMPLOYMENT OFFERED IN 2009

Galaxy Entertainment Group (GEG) yesterday issued a statement announcing the redundancies of 270 of its casino staff, but promised them employment when the company's mega resort opens in 2009. The cut-backs affected both locals and expatriates at Grand Waldo and President Casinos.

Positions that were made redundant included pit managers and supervisors, dealers and their inspectors as well as security guards. According to the release, “the decision was necessary for the two city clubs to cope with the changing market environment and to maximise operational efficiencies.”

Upon press insistence on the company's redundancy policy, GEG's public relations man Philip Ho explained that “the two casinos [were] undergoing a business review and changes, consequently resulting in the number of gaming tables being reduced, in particular baccarat, from larger to smaller tables, adding that the positions of dealer and dealer supervisor were those mostly affected, as they are invariably being taken up by local residents.

Trade Union legislator Kwan Tsui Hang expressed concern at the recent developments, saying that it reflects the fact that the gaming sector in Macau has entered a period of adjustment. Hang added that it was time for the Government to assess fully the labour needs of the gaming sector, particularly to create opportunities to allow local croupiers to be promoted to become supervisors.
