Over the weekend Genting Singapore PLC, incorporated in the Isle of Man and formerly known as Genting International, was granted its casino licence for Resorts World Sentosa by the Singapore Casino Regulatory Authority. A company statement said that on 6 February 2010 a casino licence was issued to its wholly-owned subsidiary Resorts World at Sentosa Pte Ltd. There was no mention of an opening date for the casino.
On 20 January four of the six hotels at the integrated casino resort were opened - the Festive Hotel, Hard Rock Hotel, Hotel Michael and Crockfords Tower. Ten restaurants and some shops are also functioning. Although there has been no announcement from the company on a casino opening date there is speculation that it will commence operations later this week, probably on Saturday, along with the Universal Studios theme park. Chinese New Year celebrations commence on 14 February, which could prove to be both fortuitous for gambling revenues and an auspicious time for opening.
The Resorts World Sentosa development is expected to provide as many as 45,000 jobs, 8,000 by early 2010. The Universal Studios attraction is divided into seven themed zones created for Singapore and the Asian market. Mr Tan Hee Teck, CEO of Resorts World Sentosa, said: “Asians love movies and we are proud to introduce the region’s first and only Universal Studios theme park. Universal Studios Singapore will be one of the biggest and most exciting theme parks in the world, and it will be a tourism crown jewel for not just Singapore, but the whole region.”
According to the company, the casino is more than just gaming. “Resorts World Casino is where you can see Dale Chihuly’s magnificent glass sculptures, taste some of Singapore’s best culinary delights, and watch top-class shows - all these on top of a wide array of table games, slots and electronic games available.” Owned and operated by Asia’s largest and oldest gaming operator, Resorts World Casino is said to be unrivalled in its intimate knowledge of Asian gaming preferences. Genting claims that once open the place will brim with activities 24/7 and be complemented by unparalleled customer privileges. (E-02.08.10)
