The GMB – Britain’s General Union - has been in existence for over 120 years and this Wednesday its officers were in evidence supporting casino workers at three sites to be closed by Genting Casinos. According to the GMB, there will be more casinos closing around the country as companies seek to limit their losses in the present economic climate. On 6 April around 70 staff at the three sites were called together and informed of the closures.
Genting is to close the Manchester Mint, the Leicester Electric Circus and the Great Yarmouth Mint. People working at the first two sites should have the opportunity to continue working at alternative local Genting properties but those in Great Yarmouth have been told that redeployment is not an option. The GMB is seeking talks with Genting Casinos and will be working to improve relocation packages and to obtain adequate severance payments.
Adrian Baker, GMB National Casinos Organiser said, “These clubs are the latest in a long line of established Casinos that have seen their doors close as a result of aggressive competition from across the Gaming industry and there is little doubt that that they will not be the last." He added, “The Great Yarmouth staff have shown the same dedication, loyalty and commitment to Genting. GMB is seeking talks on all the options open for these staff including relocation to others parts of the country and decent severance arrangements for those who lose their jobs.” (E-04.08.11)
