So far the Indian Government has refused to consider legislating for casinos and the Caravela, a casino boat off Goa operated by Casinos Austria International and Advani Pleasure Cruise Company, is the only casino available to gamblers. Now Leelaventure Ltd will launch the second floating casino, also in Goa, on a catamaran acquired by the company. The boat will be moored the required distance out to sea to comply with the law.
Leelaventure, a major hospitality group, is aiming for its up-market customers, and the floating casino will have a restaurant. The Caravela, in contrast, markets itself as an entertainment destination and attracts around 35,000 tourists annually. The Leela Group, calling itself ‘The Essence of India,’ claims to have built its reputation on innovation, excellence and perfection. Apart from the Leela Goa, the company has other 5-star hotels in Mumbai, Bangalore, Kovalam and Udaipur.
As yet Leelaventure has not named a company to run the floating casino. It is in the process of evaluating various international operators, including companies from Europe, the US and Nepal. The local Goa government will be paid a one-time deposit and an annual licence fee. Goa, once a Portuguse colony, is a popular tourist destination for both Indians and foreigners. The new floating casino is scheduled to open in August. (E-05.23.06)
