PhiladelphiaPark Casino pays out with a smile

A GRACIOUS GESTURE

It may not be a payment of millions of dollars, a mere US$102,000, but on Saturday the PhiladelphiaPark Casino paid out with a smile. It could be called a case of good public relations, after constant adverse media attention following the management’s refusal to pay a jackpot awarded by error, but the newly opened racino has chosen the right course of action. The casino has admitted that human error caused the problem in the in-house computer system, and not a slot machine malfunction.

A casino spokesman was reported to have told The Philadelphia Inquirer that the answer could lie in employee training, rather than in changes to the structure or system, and that the casino would endeavour to ensure that such a situation never arose again. It appears that management has learned an invaluable lesson, or one that cost US$102,000 anyway. The mistake, allegedly by a test run on the video promotion system, has been graciously rectified by a full payout. All credit to the casino for paying out with a minimum of fuss and no legal claims and counter claims.

Only requesting that the winner made positive comments about the casino, which lucky Stephen Wilkinson was happy to do, the PhiladelphiaPark Casino management paid out following an investigation that found that the back of house employee and Wilkinson were not involved in a scam. The payment was made despite the fact that any claim lodged with the courts was considered unlikely to succeed. Public confidence in the operation will have been restored, good will have been generated, and the US$102,000 may yet prove to have been money well spent. (E-01.29.07)
