Gaming in the Gulf Coast region of Mississippi normalises

SOUTHERN GAMING SUMMIT RETURNS

With a welcome reception on May 8 the annual Southern Gaming Summit returns to Biloxi, Mississippi next year. The 13th edition of the event on 9-10 May 2007 will have a full programme of conferences and educational seminars as well as more than 300 exhibitors. The International Masters of Gaming Law, comprised of lawyers, regulators and other experts will present sessions on Indian gaming, the management of casino liabilities and the legal ramifications of new technologies.

Today, one year after the first casinos reopened in Biloxi following the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina, the Mississippi Gaming Commission will meet at the Beau Rivage Resort & Casino. The Commission will give Gulf Coast elected officials an update on the present state of gaming in Mississippi. As of October there were seven functioning casinos in the Biloxi and Gulfport areas of the Gulf Coast.

This year the Southern Gaming Summit, organised by the Mississippi Casino Operators Association and Ascend Media Gaming Group, had to be moved to Tunica. The return of the event, the largest annual convention on the Gulf Coast, to Biloxi is seen as further progress in the recovery of the region. From zero gross gaming revenue in September 2005, GGR for September 2006 was a near record at over US$109.5 million. October and November this year have shown that gaming revenue is back to pre-hurricane figures, largely due to the efforts made in Mississippi to encourage operators to rebuild.
