Gambling is good for us, according to a provocative new book

“Gambling - A Healthy Bet” to be launched next week

Dr. Patrick Basham, Director of the Democracy Institute, and Dr. John Luik, a Senior Fellow, have announced the launch of their book ‘Gambling - A Healthy Bet’ on 27 January 2011. The launch is scheduled for 6.15pm at the Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA), 2 Lord North Street, London, SW1 (door on Great Peter Street). The Democracy Institute is a politically independent public policy research organization based in Washington and London. It aims to provide a balanced and thoughtful perspective on topical issues, promoting open and rational debate based on evidence rather than ideology.

In the book the authors argue that gambling is a net contributor to public health, economic life, and an important component of a liberal society. Gambling has become a widespread pastime for a simple, single and unassailable reason: gambling adds to the sum of human happiness. Based upon their rigorous examination of gambling’s many faces and many sides, the authors conclude that policymakers should leave gamblers – and the gambling industry – alone.

With a large number of countries and an even larger number of organisations still practising pre deluge opposition to the establishment of gambling as a regular pastime in their communities, the joint authorship book is bound to be an essential tool for operators, regulators, politicians and open-minded people in sustaining their support for the gambling industry, as long as it is well legislated and regulated.
