Tribe operating the world’s largest casino looks for further expansion

MASHANTUCKET PEQUOTS BROADEN THEIR HORIZON

Foxwoods Casino Resort in Connecticut opened in 1992 and is the largest casino in the world, in size if not in table games. It reputedly also generates the most gambling revenue and can claim to be the most profitable, although as a tribal enterprise the Mashantucket Pequot Tribal Nation’s casino does not have to publish figures. Foxwoods is undergoing a further US$700 million expansion that will open in early 2008.

Last December a group headed by Foxwoods was chosen by the Pennsylvania Gaming Control Board to build a US$560 million casino on the Delaware River in Philadelphia. These expansion plans beyond the Connecticut borders are presumably just the start because now the Mashantucket Pequots are considering running the first Indian casino in Atlantic City.

A preliminary agreement between the tribe and MGM Mirage was announced in 2004 encompassing joint projects in Connecticut, Atlantic City and Las Vegas. The expansion at Foxwoods Resort Casino is in partnership with MGM Mirage. A 14-acre site next to Trump Marina Hotel Casino in Atlantic City could become the next project for the joint venture, but any such plans are at an early stage. (E-02.14.07)
