Legislative proposal sets 2% special tax on all gaming operations

Unknown number of casinos in Costa Rica

A report from the Finance Sub commission entrusted with the study of Gaming Regulations Law No. 17551 for betting and casinos in Costa Rica, has expressed uncertainty at the number of companies operating gambling business, especially online, in the country.

In view of this, representatives in the Finance Permanent Commission have ensured to carry on with the study of the legislation proposals in the parliamentary session set for Wednesday 20, where a decision on this matter is anticipated. The Gaming Regulations project haas set a 2% tax on all casinos and betting companies to generate revenue to be used in public security and to combat crime.

Additionally, through the new Law, the Government seeks to regulate the gaming sector including casinos, betting and online gambling in all its forms in duly licensed businesses, with the intention of keeping high moral habits in the country, and to safeguard the general public from questionable gaming businesses.

Representative Patricia Quiroz said that the gaming law project contains important factors regarding information on the companies that operate gambling businesses in Costa Rica, to ensure that there is a projection on the revenue generated through the tax. Also, Quiroz said that once the online companies have been identified as operating from Costa Rica, they should be forced to install their servers in the country. (E-04.21.10)
