Sun International focuses beyond South Africa

STRATEGIES FOR GROWTH

Known throughout the world for its mega casino resort destinations in South Africa, Sun International has recently been thinking more and more outside the box. Frustrated in its UK ambitions by the new Gambling Act, the company has moved into a joint gaming operation in Chile, 40% equity and management/consultancy agreements subject to regulatory approval, and is preparing to launch itself in Nigeria with a 49% interest in the Federal Palace Hotel.

In its investor report to 30 June 2007 Sun International stated: ‘The group is specifically focused on the development, operation and management of hotels, resorts and casinos. We will continue to position ourselves to take advantage of opportunities in those markets where we can achieve a strong market position benefiting from our innovation and depth of experience.’

This philosophy can be seen to be taking shape in a new venture in Egypt. Outside South Africa Sun International already runs casino resorts in Botswana, Lesotho, Namibia, Swaziland and Zambia. The first phase of the Port Ghalib project on Egypt’s Red Sea, with three 5-star hotels and convention centre, will open before the end of the year.

In India the focus will be on attracting the FIT and MICE sectors (Foreign Inclusive Travellers and Meetings, Incentives, Conventions and Exhibitions) in Delhi, Mumbai and elsewhere. Sun International has seen good growth in marketing its resorts to the significant emerging tourism markets of Brazil, India, China and Russia. (E-11.19.07)
