Caravela applies to build private jetty as present lease expires

PUBLIC PROTEST PROMPTS MOVE

The latest news from the Indian state of Goa is that the original offshore casino ship Caravela, which presently moors in Panaji, is expected to move to the other side of the River Mandovi. Application has been made to the Captain of Ports for the construction of a private jetty at Verem-Reis Magos and is awaiting approval and the issue of a no objection certificate.

The lease on the use of the fisheries jetty expired last month and renewal has met with opposition. Many local people in Panaji, who have coexisted with the Caravela for several years, have come out strongly against offshore casinos since the government issued more licences. Congestion in the river’s shipping lanes and the destruction of traditional fishing grounds by dredging have caused anger.

Before the owners of the Caravela can start building a private jetty the people living that side of the river must generally agree to the plan. There are additional proposals under consideration for another jetty at Captain of Ports and the renovation of an existing jetty at Old Goa. The Britona jetty is already in the process of being renovated.

At present other prospective casino ships that have arrived in the area include Pride of Goa, moored in the River Mandovi, and Hotel Leela’s ship that is moored at the Captain of Ports jetty. At least one other casino ship is expected to arrive shortly. The opposition BJP party has already said it made a mistake in not opposing offshore casinos when it was part of a government coalition, and says the party has not ruled out forming an association with NGOs to put an end to floating casinos in Goa.
