Last year Queensland introduced legislation making it compulsory for the exclusion of patrons from gambling areas if they asked to be excluded. Throughout Australia and New Zealand regulations are being tightened following the explosion of gaming machines (pokies) that have been causing increasing concern over problem gambling. In Brisbane, Queensland’s capital, the Conrad Treasury Casino has declared a commitment to responsible gambling.
One way by which it is thought excess gambling can be curtailed is by players being reminded, whilst playing gaming machines, of both the time and money they have spent. New Zealand has passed laws to ensure that the machines pause and that the data is always visible. Jupiters’ Conrad Treasury Casino has now launched a new line of Aristocrat machines that show how much will be spent when making a particular choice of play, as well as visibly logging spending per minute and hour.
So far only seven of the new machines have been installed, but as machines are updated they will include the data displays. In April 2000 the Queensland Government released its 'Policy Direction for Gambling in Queensland' in response to growing concern over the growth of gambling in the community, particularly on gaming machines. The industry as a whole is putting procedures in place and training staff so that responsible gambling measures impact positively on players. (E-11.21.06)
