In 2003 the Colony Club Casino was opened in Blantyre, Malawi by KaiRo International. The company now proposes to develop a purpose-built casino in Mount Pleasant and has conducted a groundbreaking ceremony at the site. The new project will bring the investment KaiRo has made in the country to US$5.2 million. The new casino is expected to start construction next month at a cost of US$4 million and should provide a boost to the Malawi tourist industry.
General Manager Angus Macaulay has said that KaiRo will be working closely with both the Ministry of Information and Tourism and the Malawi Gaming Board. Site clearance is due to start next week and the casino should open in 2008. The casino complex will include an international restaurant, shopping centre, amphitheatre, sports bar, a cultural heritage centre, botanical gardens and museum. The new Blantyre casino should give local residents a much wider choice of entertainment as well as providing a draw for tourists. The construction company and the architects are Malawian companies.
KaiRo International also operates La Palm Atlantic Casino in Accra in Ghana and the New Africa Hotel and Casino in Dar-es-Slaam and Safari Casino in Arushain Tanzania. It has interests in casinos in Johannesburg and Newcastle in South Africa and is in a joint venture with Ladbrokes.com for online gaming throughout Africa and the Indian Ocean Islands. (E-02.26.07)
