Port Zante in St Kitts, West Indies offers beautiful promenades surrounded by elegant shops and a deep harbour where cruise ships such as the Queen Mary II make regular stops. The Sunny Group, which started as an educational book distributor in Barbados in 1981 and expanded into gaming operations in Africa and the Caribbean, has been awarded a slot machine licence by the St Kitts government for its gaming subsidiary Mapau Inc. to open next to the pier in Port Zante.
Trinidad-based Sunny Group describes its latest venture as an entertainment centre that will become a mecca for nightlife in St Kitts/Nevis, and will promote the islands’ culture with live performances from local bands and artistes. The company recently invested EC$11 million (Eastern Caribbean Dollars – approx. US$29 million) in the St Kitts Experience at Port Zante, which is due to open shortly with 51 full-time employees plus additional part-time staff.
The Sunny Group claims its success comes from knowing what the customer wants. The company is involved in casino ownership and operations as well as being a software provider. Ma Pau is its online gambling business that is licensed by
the Gaming Commission of Antigua and Barbuda. The Internet casino commenced operations in 1996.
The 2-storey 14,000 sq ft premises at Port Zante will house 200 slot machines at ground level with 2 bars, a Sweetlime seafood restaurant (another Sunny Group brand) and a nightclub. An Entertainment and Visitor Welcome Centre will be one of the first things seen by over half a million cruise ship passengers arriving in St Kitts and will be the company’s main target market. Mapau is scheduled to open sometime this summer. (E-05.21.08)
