US workers to fight new legislation

MAY DAY PROTESTS

In many places around the world, the first day of May is celebrated as International Workers’ Day or Labour Day. Neither the United States nor Canada observes the day; Labor Day in the US has been the first Monday in September since the 1880s, in order to maintain its disassociation with internationalist movements. However, this year 1 May has been chosen for rallies, walkouts and marches across America against US immigration reform.

The many Hispanic workers in the country are not alone in the belief that increased enforcement against illegal immigrants is a step in the wrong direction. Yesterday top executives in the Las Vegas gaming industry met to discuss contingency plans to cover absentee employees, whilst seeking to show support for their workers.

Rescheduling and extra training will ensure that Las Vegas casinos will function as near normally as possible on Monday. Over 50% of gaming industry employees are of Hispanic origin, and major casino bosses are expected to sign the petition due to be circulated on 1 May. A rally will be held at the Freemont Street Experience at 6 p.m. on Monday evening. (E-04.27.06)
