Since 1991 French law has required separate areas for smokers and non-smokers in all public places, but this has seldom been enforced. On 1 February 2007 a new law banned smoking in workplaces, schools and hospitals, with fines for non-compliance for both individuals and companies. A tough new anti-tobacco law will come into force on 1 January 2008, meaning total smoking prohibition including cafes, bars, restaurants, nightclubs and other places of entertainment.
French casino operator Groupe Lucien Barriere has already made preparations for the continued comfort of their clientele, both smokers and non-smokers. With the theme ‘A Change of Air’ an information campaign was launched last May in all Casinos Barriere properties. Aware of the importance of the new legislation for clients, the company has provided new signage indicating the reserved spaces where smokers can light up without leaving the casino, on prepared terraces and booths with extractor fans.
Under the law smoking will only be permitted in hermetically sealed smoking rooms with powerful extractor fans. Casinos Barriere are maintaining a tradition of comfort and fun for players, and hope to welcome a new clientele of non-smokers. From 1 November the company is offering Casinos Barriere lollipops to all its customers, to encourage them to adopt a no-smoking attitude. The lollipops will be available at the bars and on 1.8m easily visible display stands around the casinos.
The l’O2 bar at the casino in Deauville, opened in July, launched the concept of offering a puff of pure air at an oxygen bar: a pipe of oxygen enhanced with essential oils and subtle beneficial perfumes. Refreshing cocktails in information campaign colours, as well as lollipops, will be offered at the company’s 38 casinos. Casinos Barriere are leading the way into the new smoke-free era by continuing to promote responsible and fun gambling entertainment. (E-10.31.07)
