Spanish psychiatrist edits a guide to gambling addiction

A BOOK THAT CONFRONTS THE PROBLEM

Few would dispute that gambling addiction can cause havoc to individuals and those around them, or that there should be adequate recognition and treatment of the problem. In Singapore, where casinos will be part of two Integrated Resorts, the government, which has often been accused of 'nanny' status, has made certain provisions to minimise problem gambling but has taken the view that it is down to the individual who should take responsibility for their addiction.

Dr Jesus Ramos, a psychiatrist at Madrid's Ramon and Cajal Hospital, has been the coordinator at the Gambling Addiction Unit for a number of years, one of the few places in Spain specialising in the treatment of the illness. Dr Ramos has compiled a book, based on experiences accumulated at the Unit, that analyses the risk factors as well treatments and prevention. The book also describes the stages to follow for both addicts and their families, and exclusion methods so that the problem can be resolved.

The publication is a complete guide to all aspects of gambling addiction and has the objective of helping to combat the chronic illness that affects an estimated one million Spanish. Dr Ramos is of the opinion, not unexpectedly, that the increase in addicts is the result of regulating gambling and that the advent of Internet gambling will make the situation worse. He does, however, say that as yet the consequences are not known.

For as long as there is gambling there will be gambling addicts and gambling research and gambling studies. Hundreds of thousands of dollars are spent and the resultant statistics, theories and pronouncements used to back pro and anti gambling lobbies. Maybe there will be breakthroughs to come in the prevention and treatment of problem gambling, but addictive personalities will be difficult to alter. Education must remain the starting point for keeping gambling as an enjoyable pastime for the vast majority of the population. (E-05.05.05)
