Throughout the year over 600 participants competed for a place in the grand finale of the Gran Casino Margarita Poker Tour. 200 qualified for the final last month on Venezuela’s Margarita Island in the Caribbean. 1,000 million Bolivar (over US$450,000) was won, bringing total prize money awarded during the competition to more than 2,000 million Bolivar (over US$925,000).
The tournament winner was Jaime Lewin, who not only won around US$185,000 but also his enrolment in the World Series of Poker (WSOP) final in Las Vegas. The runner-up in the final, Ernesto Ibrahim, also gets to attend as well as a prize amounting to some US$70,000. The rest of the ten who contested the final table have been enrolled in the final of the Majestic Poker Tour in Santo Domingo, where they could also win registration at the WSOP.
From next year the Gran Casino Margarita Poker Tour will be included as part of the Majestic Poker Tour, the first poker tour circuit in Latin America. In October the Spanish company CIRSA announced an agreement with Harrah's to host a Latin American satellite WSOP tournament to be run at its Majestic Casinos in Panama, Santo Domingo, Peru and Isla Margarita. The next event on the tour will be held at the Majestic Santo Domingo from 16th to18th February 2006. (E-12.23.05)
