Clermont Leisure acquires basement for casino development in Bradford

MIDLAND HOTEL CASINO DEAL

Clermont Leisure, a wholly owned subsidiary of Singapore-based BIL International, has signed a conditional agreement for a 25-year lease on the basement of the Midland Hotel in Bradford. The Gambling Commission has approved the company as a casino operator and it already has casino licences for Glasgow, Middlesborough and Wolverhampton. Clermont Leisure obtained a gaming licence for the Midland Hotel last month.

Twenty-five Certificates of Consent for Clermont Leisure have been approved for casinos around Britain, and another five are awaiting consent. Last year the company acquired the famous Clermont Club casino in London’s Berkeley Square. Clermont Leisure commissioned three major companies to undertake probably the most extensive and intensive casino market research in the UK in order to investigate gaming opportunities.

BIL International has a primary listing on the Singapore Stock Exchange and secondary listings in London and New Zealand. Apart from Clermont Leisure, its portfolio includes the UK’s Thistle Hotels, a property development company in the US and another in Fiji, and a 45.5% interest in an Australian oil company. Peel Hotels, which bought the Midland in 1998, has carried out major refurbishment of the property, including a £400,000 redevelopment of the Princes Ballroom. (E-10.10.07)
