Statewide the regional gaming win in Nevada in June was 3.47% down on June 2005. Over the fiscal year to 30 June 2006 the story was different – a rise of 10.8%. In all Nevada only Downtown Las Vegas has a worse fiscal year-to-date than last year, down 1.8%. The figures for the month of June this year show that the Las Vegas area suffered the most. The Las Vegas Strip gaming win was down 7.10% and Downtown down 13.16%.
Nevada’s Governor Kenny Guinn commented, "This slight downturn serves as a reminder that an economy based so much on tourism is always at the mercy of higher gas prices and a slowing of the economy. Although our year-to-date numbers are good and ahead of the Economic Forum's forecast, we need to be ever vigilant about factors that can lead to a decline in tourist travel to Nevada."
In Washoe County things are improving. Reno’s casino revenue rose in the last fiscal year for the first time in six years, up 5.9% to just under US$774.79 million. The upturn in fortune has been attributed to increased play by locals, casino refurbishment, and more marketing campaigns. The downturn in Las Vegas was attributed to lucky players causing a fall in the percentage of wagers won by the casinos. Nevada collected US$55.1 million in July from fees based on taxable casino revenue generated in June. (E-08.11.06)
