When a company goes the extra yard in its Human Relations efforts it does so in the knowledge that internal marketing is just as important as getting an increase in the customer footfall. Looking after the work force is of equal importance to looking after the 'kings' - both as sources of revenue, because with the former the company looks after the pennies whilst the clients represent the greenbacks.
The 'Healthy Workplace' award granted to MGM Mirage's New York-New York Hotel and Casino by the Nevada State Psychological Association (NSPA) and the American Psychological Association (APA) is in recognition of the hotel and casino's excellence in creating and maintaining a work environment that is considerate of the psychological health of its 2,400 employees. Additionally, both organizations cited New York-New York for its corporate diversity and literacy initiatives, tuition reimbursement program and the establishment of English-as-a-second language (ESL) classes. The large number of non-English speakers is a current source of worry for employers, in this case hispanic workers are the most likely beneficiaries of the ESL programmes.
It is no surprise then that the Latin Chamber of Commerce, one of the premier business organizations serving the Hispanic community in Southern Nevada, has named MGM MIRAGE as the 2005 'Corporation of the Year'. The award is presented annually to recognize companies whose commitment to diversity is exemplified through outstanding workplace initiatives and community relations efforts.
Eloiza Martinez, LCC President said: "We are proud to present this award to MGM MIRAGE, a company that believes in our shared vision of community involvement, diversity and economic development. They are committed to the concept of developing strong community partnerships and how we all win when we work together." MGM MIRAGE has partnered with the Latin Chamber of Commerce on a variety of community-based initiatives, including sponsorship of La Opportunidad, the Chamber's annual Business Expo and Career Fair. The company also contributes to the organization's scholarship program to assist fund Clark County High School graduates with their higher education aspirations.
In accepting the award at the annual awards gala, Debra Nelson, MGM MIRAGE Vice President of Corporate Diversity and Community Affairs, applauded the Latin Chamber's success since its inception in 1976, and said: "The Latin Chamber enjoys an exemplary position in our community for which we at MGM MIRAGE have been most pleased to be associated. The chamber's commitment to improving the quality of life in our community and to uplifting and empowering those served by the services, in many respects, mirrors our commitment to corporate social responsibility."
Effective internal marketing policies are there to ensure that personnel receive as much care and attention as the engine of a vehicle, with fine tuning and timely maintenance for constant better performance. Lorenzo Creighton, President New York- New York is spot on: "We know that the psychological health of employees is as important as the financial health of the company. When employees are healthy and happy in their work, productivity is at its best, enabling us to deliver outstanding service to our customers." (E-10.12.05)
