Nicaragua’s State Attorney for Children calls for distance

Casinos and bars should be away from schools

In Managua the State Attorney responsible for Nicaragua’s children, Norma Moreno, has said that casinos, bars and slots operations should be located more than 100 meters from schools and should be penalised by law for not adhering to such a regulation. Moreno said, “We are making recommendations to the Ministry of Education so that they, together with the Ministry of Interior, verify that these businesses are not sited close to education centres.”

The Minister added that last year one bar was successfully closed for sexual exploitation according to laws under the children’s code and National Police, which prohibit the sale of liquor, drugs and casinos close to schools. Moreno added that it was usually students and/or their parents who denounced such businesses, which frequently were guilty of sexual exploitation and deliberately opening where there was a flow of students.

Finally the Children’s Minister announced that an agreement had been reached between the National Lottery and the Police to achieve the decommissioning and destruction of all slot machines found to be operating near education centres. Last year the Casinos and Slot Machines Law was debated with a view to relocate casinos outside some areas and also to regulate slot machines and the online lottery. The initiative seeks to move gaming to 4- or 5-star hotels with a minimum of 30 rooms and aims to prevent gambling activity amongst children and young people. (E-02.02.10)
