New attitudes to Internet gambling

Illinois approves online betting

Last week’s Delaware Supreme Court ruling seems to have cleared the way for sports betting in that state and to limit the options of opponents challenging the new law. The National Football League and the NCAA are known to be against allowing sports betting to become legal. As budget deficits increase across the US, expanded gaming looks an increasingly attractive solution to some of the problems.

In New Jersey there is a move to sue the federal government over its restrictions on sports betting – Delaware was one of only four states that were grandfathered in when the federal government outlawed sports betting in the other 46 states. In Washington the Chairman of the House Financial Services Committee, Barney Frank, a keen poker player, has introduced a bill to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act (UIGEA).

This week legislators in Illinois have approved a bill that would allow residents to bet on horse racing at online sites. Having been passed by the Senate, the bill was passed by 87 votes in favour to 27 against by the House. However, the lawmakers are unsure how UIGEA will affect the new rule, although with the Obama administration in place there are hopes that online betting could become regulated, taxed and legally open to US citizens.
