A rapid increase in the numbers of Online Casinos is in the cards for South Africa. The publishing of the National Gaming Law has made the first steps to legislate for Online gaming in the country.
At the moment there are only two gaming sites operating: Silversands and Swaziland-based Piggs Peak. As previously reported Piggs Peak is well-received in the country as it is the online version of the prestigious operator Howard Berkowitz's casino of the same name. Both Online sites offer games in local currency, the Rand, which is important to players under the country's monetary controls.
The betting public in South Africa likes the Online Gaming as the prizes can be better than the land-based casinos. In the case of Piggs Peak they also have promotions taking their clients to the beautiful casino resort in the heart of Africa.
Speaking to leading gaming operators in South Africa about the legalization of Online casinos it seems that it is only a matter of time until they enter the sector. From an announcement in the local newspaper The Star, and from South African delegates bringing fresh legislative news to G2E, it is apparent that both casino operators and suppliers of online games technology will be applying for licenses from the National Gaming Commission, who already made declarations about this sector of gaming in 1999 when it was understood that the respective legislation would only be a few months.
Five years after the achievements of the ANC in South Africa, and two serious Online Gaming operators properly authorized, as well as the government initiative, there are reports that additional investigations are sought, somewhat superfluously, on aspects of Online gaming. As the 1966 National Gaming Law alluded to Online gaming, and the subject has been under discussion since 1999, the authorities should proceed to establish the necessary regulations needed to control it and grant licences for the benefit of the country and the industry.
