The Grand Bahama operation Our Lucaya Casino, presently run by Isle of Capri, will be taken over by Treasure Bay Casino and Resorts, Inc. The announcement was made by the Minister of Tourism & Aviation, Vincent Vanderpool-Wallace, who confirmed that the US company had been selected by the government to replace outgoing Isle of Capri.
Treasure Bay, operator of the Treasure Bay Casino Resort in Biloxi, Mississippi and Divi Carina Bay Casino on St. Croix, Virgin Islands, has agreed to retain existing staff and to work towards a smooth transition of ownership. The company must now obtain certification by the Hotel Corporation of The Bahamas and meet licensing requirements of the Gaming Board.
Recent news has not been so positive for The Bahamas. The Atlantis complex laid off 800 workers last year and the Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino announced it would close until 5 October. The Four Seasons Exuma closed in May although it has since been purchased by Sandals International Resort. Last week the Port Lucaya Resort & Yacht Club said it was closing 31 August after nearly 16 years. (E-09.04.09)
