The Nepal parliament´s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) announced last week that it has issued “strict instructions to the government to scrap operating licenses of casinos that fail to pay outstanding royalties and fines” Now four properties: Casino Royal, Casino Anna, Casino Nepal and Casino Fulbari, are set to lose their operating licenses as a consequence of failing to abide by the PAC’s muscle.
In a document published last Friday, the PAC said: “Despite repeated attempts, casinos operated by the Nepal Recreation Center (NRC) and others still have not paid their royalties and fines. Based on the spirit of our previous decision, PAC instructs the government to immediately scrap their operating licenses.” According to the Department of Revenue Investigation (DRI), Casino Nepal’s outstanding royalty and fines are US$1.8 million (130 million Nepalese Rupees); Casino Anna US$1.4 million; Casino Fulbari US$866,000; and Casino Royal US$307,000.
PAC also has instructed the Ministry of Tourism, Ministry of Finance and the DRI to recover the outstanding dues by selling the casinos´ property. If the disposal of property fails to generate enough money, PAC instructed the government to collect the deficit amount from the hotel owners, pointing out that the casino licences, after all, were issued to the hotels.
