‘No longer commercially viable’

Portsmouth casino to close

At the end of next month the Genting Group will close its Mint Casino (formerly Stanley Casino) in Guildhall Walk, Portsmouth. According to the company the casino ‘is no longer commercially viable’ and an electronic gaming and slot machine leisure venue will replace the casino at a new site in Commercial Road. Some staff will be able to transfer to the new operation but around 20 jobs will go.

Genting blames consumer trends for the casino closure, scheduled for 30 November. The new Electric Circus should open in December if planning permission is granted. Genting already has Electric Circus operations in Manchester, Leicester, Birmingham and Luton, some with 24 hour opening. Employees at the Mint have described business as being very slow recently.

Portsmouth has two Rank Group casinos, including the large Grosvenor Casino Portsmouth Gunwharf with 32 electronic roulettes as well as table games and slot machines. The Genting Electric Circus venues are mainly electronic roulettes although, according to reports, the Portsmouth Electric Circus also will offer fruit machines and arcade games. (E-10.29.09)
