Casino resort development planned for Cambodia

QLI BUYS MORE LAND

With many casino developers looking at Asian locations, Cambodia is increasingly attracting attention. This week Queenco Leisure International Limited (QLI) announced that it has purchased a prime beachfront plot in Sihanouk Ville, south-west Cambodia, to develop as a destination casino resort. The company paid US$10 million for 9 hectares of land and has acquired exclusive rights from the Cambodian Government for the shoreline in front of the site.

The beachfront resort will be based around a casino but will include hotels, conference centre and other attractions. QLI believes that there will be strong demand for the leisure destination from neighbouring Thai and Vietnamese visitors, and that new international transport links will transform Sihanouk Ville. The Cambodian Government is intending to expand the local airport to cater for international flights.

Commenting on the announcement, Dror Mizeretz, CEO of QLI, said: ‘I am delighted that QLI has been able to acquire such an ideal location for developing a new resort and casino complex. Along with the expansion of Sihanouk Ville’s airport, the area is being transformed as a tourist destination, with a growing local economy, as both foreign and domestic investors recognise the future potential of the area.’

QLI was established in 1995 and opened casinos in Loutraki, Greece and Bucharest, Romania. In 2001 it took over the casino in Rhodes and later expansion included leisure and gaming venues in the Czech Republic and Serbia. One year ago QLI purchased 48 hectares of land in Sihanouk Ville as part of its strategy to seek out attractive development opportunities in emerging markets. (E-02.07.08)
