Wembley Stadium development approved

QUINTAIN ESTATES GETS GO-AHEAD

Fifty-eight acres of brownfield site surrounding the new National Stadium at Wembley, north London, are owned by Quintain Estates. The Stadium, however, does not belong to them.

A couple of weeks ago the company was informed that the London Borough of Kent had received a letter from the Office of the Deputy Prime Minister, through the Government Office for London, signalling approval for Quintain's comprehensive redevelopment of 42 acres.

The redevelopment would provide 6,100 jobs, 3,700 new homes, 366,00 sq ft of new retail space and 82,000 sq ft of new community space, 678,000 sq ft of office space and a 470-room hotel. In addition there would be a large leisure complex to include casino and cinemas.

Caesar's Entertainment, Inc has expressed an interest in the proposed complex but is 'monitoring developments', referring to the progress of the UK government's deregulation plans for gaming. If they do become part of the huge leisure complex it is to be expected that Wembley will see the arrival of high-profile entertainers. Caesars is renowned for bringing stars to perform at its casinos.

Quintain Estates say that they would hope to start building by the end of 2004, with the aim of having the first public space areas ready for the opening of the National Stadium in 2006.
