With its customary efficiency Macau’s Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (DICJ) has published the Monthly Gross Revenue from Games of Fortune for January. The figure of MOP 18.57 billion (US$2.3 billion) is an increase of 33.2% on January 2010. Gaming revenue in Macau reached record numbers in 2010 with demand from VIP players booming and a growing mass market. Some analysts believe that 2011 may not break gaming revenue records but that the market should remain strong.
January revenue was down on the previous month but only slightly, being the third highest on record after October and December last year. Gaming revenue is forecast to grow some 29% this year, boosted by the scheduled opening of Galaxy Entertainment’s casino resort on the Cotai Strip later this year. This month the Chinese celebrate the Lunar New Year, which commences tomorrow and should provide a week of strong gambling activity in Macau.
The release of the January gaming revenue figures by the DICJ has prompted a rise in the shares of casino operators in Macau. In January SJM Holdings held 30% of the gambling market, followed by Sands Macao with 22%. Official figures show that gaming revenue was around four times that of Las Vegas in 2010 at US$23.5 billion and 57.8% up on 2009, confirming the over 50% rise predicted by the Director of the DICJ in October last year.
