June brings another decrease in slots revenue

ATLANTIC CITY FEELS THE COMPETITION

Casino companies operating in Atlantic City may have cause to regret that the looming budget impasse in Pennsylvania, that threatened the new slots operations with temporary closure, is over. Atlantic City gaming revenue last month continued to slide, albeit not by much, in a jurisdiction that is accustomed to seeing a monthly rise.

New operations in the Philadelphia, Poconos and New York City areas are taking their toll on casinos in New Jersey’s gambling haven, Atlantic City. Aside from unionisation and smoking restriction troubles in the Atlantic City market, casino operators there are having to face the challenge of increasing competition for gambling dollars.

Casino win for June was US$419.8, a 1.9% drop from June 2006. Slots revenue decreased by 4.9%, tables revenue increased by 6.9%, but over 72% of casino win came from slot machines. It seems that Atlantic City will have to work even harder to promote additional attractions and reduce its dependency on slot machine revenue. (E-07.11.07)
