Swansea makeover continues with casino development

ASPERS SPENDS MILLIONS

Swansea in Wales has ambitious plans to attract millions of visitors. It is building a water park with the revolutionary Surf Stream at its leisure centre, giving it Europe’s first indoor surfing venue. Swansea is also home to the £30 million (US$58.8 million) entertainment complex known as Salubrious Place, where the Council granted a gaming licence to Aspers in 2004.

At the time the licence was granted Aspers, like most gaming companies, thought that the UK market was opening to Las Vegas style gambling. The Swansea casino development was expected to get regional status and offer big jackpots from banks of slot machines. Over two years later that vision has transmuted into a less dazzling prospect, but Aspers is still investing £7 million (US$13.7 million) in fitting out its casino scheduled to open next year.

Over 100 people are expected to work on the project over the next seven months. Around £3.5 million (US$6.87 million) will be spent on engineering, mechanical and electrical, and a top security system is to be installed. The casino will have blackjack, roulette and poker tables as well as state-of-the-art gaming machines. Around 200 permanent jobs will be created by the project which has been designed by Australian architects. Aspers is a joint venture between Australian firm PBL and Aspinalls, Britain’s longest established gaming company. (E-12.19.06)
